lyrics

the crops are dying and there isn't any rain in sight the bones on the side of the highway are bleaching white folks sit around with their shoulders hanging low they'd rather be anywhere else but there's nowhere to go pa's been sick hasn't been out of bed in days and ma's got a tired worried look on her face this sad place looks just like an old ghost town the people just stare at the dirt while the dogs just lay around and all these fools just sit around praying rain and the preacher man's sitting at his pulpit just explaining why it never came month by month the sky stays a pale shade of grey and one by one their faith slowly fades away me and sissy were making dust angels in the yard when the banker man came to forclose on our farm pa came out to try to speak some reason to him then ma showed up and stuck a 44 to his chin grampa came and took us by the arms to hide away me and sissy went and watched by the window pane mama pulled the trigger and blew the banker man away and thunder cracked and it started pouring rain loaded our belongings on the back of the old jalopy to join the masses of the hopeless dust bowl refugees pa's on his knees begging god for ma's salvation it's off to california to work on a grape plantation it's hell on earth working someone else's dirt we'll die in these fields if the law don't get us first it's a plague of broken dreams and muffled sounds it took a lifetime to build it up and one summer just to tear it down and all these fools just sit around praying for rain and the preacher man's sitting at his pulpit just explaining why it never came and month by month the sky stays a pale shade of grey and one by one their faith slowly fades away
